Current lust

Usually my fantasies involve visions of granduer, I picture myself at my desk at the UN, fighting for humanitarian aid and global environmental causes. Other times I picture myself in Mykonos, Cannes, or Monte Carlo in a Missoni bikini.

Wardrobe staples

When I was growing up, my mother would always tell me that the key to a good wardrobe was basics. I never listened. I wanted and still want, floral tunics, neon jeans, gladiator pumps, colorful sunglasses and jewel toned maxi dresses. However, I am starting to realize there are gaping holes when I can't find, a white t-shirt, a black skirt, etc. Here are some amazing basics I have my eye on right now. Don't worry though, you will never see me without some bright colored detail, life is too vibrant to dress in all black and white all the time!
Splendid Modal Leggings
S.W.O.R.D. Leather jacket

Vince 3/4 Sleeve Blazer
Vince White T-shirt
Patterson J. Kincaid button up
Alexander Wang tank
Black cashmere cardigan
J. Brand Cigarette Jeans
Helmut Lang skinny jeans

I know, I know. They are expensive and not half as fun as some of the other goodies out there. But basics are a must to build a wardrobe. I suggest spending your money on the expensive basics that will last a lifetime and fill in with trends that cost less.

Paris, je t'aime!

I am in love with this city in so many ways. The food, the wine, the architecture, the people, c'est magnifique! I plan to live in Paris next summer and work as an au pair before starting law school. Being in love in this city was one of the most enlightening experiences of my life. To love someone so completely and be amongst so much beauty enabled me to write and dream in ways I haven't since I was a child. The days were full of baguettes, kisses, impressionist art, wandering through cobbled streets and admiring the avant garde fashion. If you don't think Paris is magical, you must not see things through the same eyes, for as Hemingway said, "Paris is a moveable feast."

I hope I never reach the age of reason..

I am currently in Chicago staring out at the cloud blanketed sky and thinking about freedom. I just finished Jean-Paul Sartre's "The Age of Reason". Mathieu, the protagonist, is obsessed with being free and it made me think about what freedom truly means. Rousseau once said, "Man is born free, yet everywhere he is in chains." While this a a sad statement, it is also true in the context of our lives today. We are so bound by real and made-up responsibilities, finances, even our goals, that we often forget how free we truly are. Traveling this summer has truly taught me how limited we make our lives and the possibilities that exist if we allow them. As an upper middle class young adult my life has been so structured that I have hardly known a time when I truly let life take me in whatever direction it pleased. While I am applying to law schools in the fall and in some ways purchasing my own handcuffs in the process, I am also hoping to maintain this lightness. A lightness that enables me to reflect on my freedom on a daily basis and know that the ties that bind me are of my own creation. My goal is to become fluent in French and practice law there, a liberating plan in the midst of schedules and limitations. Through out this blog I hope to remind myself that freedom is in my hands and that the things I love are ever present, we control our own destiny.
